Visa with Apple Pay means you’re ready to pay whenever you need it. You can use your eligible Visa card to pay for everyday things with an iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad and Mac.

Using Apple Pay is simple, and it works with the devices you use every day. Your card information is secure because it isn’t stored on your device or shared when you pay.

Just set up your Visa card with Apple Pay on iPhone 6 and later, Apple Watch, iPad Pro, iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 and later or Mac in Safari and you’re ready to go.

To pay in shops, hold iPhone near the reader with your finger on Touch ID. On Apple Watch, just double-click the side button and hold Apple Watch up to the reader. To pay in apps and on the web with iPhone and iPad, select Apple Pay as the payment method and place your finger on Touch ID.

Always Simple

It’s simple to set up. If you have a Visa card connected to your iTunes account, open your Wallet app, enter the security code on the back of your card and follow the prompts. You can also add a new card manually or by scanning it with the iPhone camera. For Apple Watch, open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone and simply select ‘Wallet and Apple Pay’, then tap ‘Add Credit or Debit Card. From there, follow the onscreens instructions.

Always Fast

It’s quick and easy. Just hold your iPhone to the contactless payment reader with your finger on Touch ID and a beep will confirm that your payment has been accepted. Or if you’re using Apple Watch, simply double-click the side button and hold the display up to the reader. To pay in apps and on the web with iPhone and iPad, select Apple Pay as the payment method during checkout and place your finger on Touch ID.

Where can I use Visa with Apple Pay?

Anywhere that accepts contactless payments. You’ll find a list of major retailers below, but you can use it in any store that displays the contactless symbol. The same applies if you’re on holiday or travelling abroad. You can also use Apple Pay in-app, where available.

How do I use Visa with Apple Pay on Transport for London?

You can use Visa with Apple Pay throughout the Transport for London network, including tubes and buses, just touch in and touch out as you can with your Visa contactless card. It involves just a few steps:

iPhone (using iOS 9 or later)

Before boarding or whilst approaching a ticket gate, double-click the Home button of your iPhone, if it is locked. This will bring up your default card in Apple Pay.
Authorise the transaction by placing your finger on Touch ID until you see 'Hold near Reader to pay' on the display.
Then touch the top of your iPhone on the yellow card reader within one minute of completing step 2 above.
You will see 'Done' on the display, feel a brief vibration and hear a beep, letting you know that payment has been sent. A green light will also be displayed on the card reader.

Most of the major banks are now offering Visa with Apple Pay, please check with your bank if you are unsure.

FAQ's

To get started, open Wallet - you can add the Visa credit or debit card already linked to your iTunes account by simply entering the card’s security code then following the prompts.

If you wish to add an additional Visa card, you can use your iPhone camera to capture your card information (or you can type it in manually) then follow the prompts.

Please note that Apple Pay on the Apple Watch is not setup through Wallet - instead you can link your Visa cards to the Apple Watch app on the paired iPhone. An alert will be displayed on the Watch once your Visa card is activated.

Apple Pay currently works with iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone SE and all Apple Watch* models. For payments through mobile apps, Apple Pay is also compatible with the iPad Air 2, iPad Mini 4 and iPad Mini 3.

*Apple Pay requires the Apple Watch to be paired with an iPhone 6 (or later) that has iOS 8.2 (or later) installed.

Apple Pay can be used to touch and pay wherever Visa contactless payment is accepted - simply look for the Contactless Symbol on any point of sale terminal.

In-Store Purchase

To make an in-store purchase with your iPhone 6 or later, just hold your device near the contactless reader with your finger held to Touch ID - when your payment information has been sent, a visual / audible confirmation will be given by the card reader and your iPhone will gently vibrate and beep - you will see 'Done' and a checkmark on your iPhone display.

To make an in-store purchase with your Apple Watch, double-click the side button then touch the face of your device to the contactless reader. When your payment information has been sent, a visual / audible confirmation will be given by the card reader and you'll feel a gentle tap to your wrist and hear a beep from your Apple Watch.

In-App Purchase

To make a purchase in-app with your compatible iPhone or iPad, select Apple Pay as the payment option in eligible apps and place your finger on Touch ID to send your payment.

Yes! On the tube, buses, trams, DLR, London Overground, TfL Rail and most National Rail services in London.

To ensure you touch in/out quickly and easily you need to get your phone/watch ready before you board a bus or tram, and as you approach the ticket gates:

open your Wallet app and select the card you want to pay with
authorise payment using the Touch ID
touch your device to a yellow card reader within 60 seconds

No – Mobile payment services such as Apple Pay can be used for payments over the £30 contactless threshold, with a growing number of UK retailers supporting what we term ‘high value’ mobile contactless payment – which involve you verifying yourself using Touch ID (for Apple Pay) or another verification method, such as a passcode entered on your device. These cardholder verification methods add an additional layer of security for peace of mind, and act in much the same way as when you use ‘Chip and PIN’ to secure payments made in store with your Visa card. High value mobile payments are also widely supported in a growing number of retailers accepting contactless payment across Europe.

*From 1 September 2015, the contactless limit increased from £20 to £30. Retailers are updating their stores throughout September and October 2015.

Tokenised Visa payments through Apple Pay

When you enrol your Visa card within Apple Pay, your payment card information (including the 16-digit account number found on the front of your Visa card) is substituted by Visa and your card issuer, with a Device Account Number that can be securely stored on Apple devices - and passed to merchants to process transactions you make with Apple Pay.

Happening behind the scenes

Your underlying Visa credit and debit card numbers are not stored on any device running Apple Pay, or on Apple servers - and are never shared with merchants through the service, acting as a powerful layer of additional security.

Visa payWave for Mobile

Visa payWave for Mobile software from Visa works in conjunction with the Secure Element (a dedicated chip in iPhone and Apple Watch), to enable the creation of a dynamic, secure code every time you make a payment with the service – this cryptographic code is transaction-specific, and passed to merchants alongside the Device Account Number for your Visa card within Apple Pay – this information allows payments sent through Apple Pay, to be processed as if they were a normal Visa card payment.

Touch ID

Apple’s Touch ID technology allows you to conveniently authenticate every payment you make to merchants through Apple Pay – using a simple touch of your finger to the compatible iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch.

Yes, Apple Pay can be used wherever simply look for the Contactless Symbol on any point of sale terminal.

To make a contactless payment with Apple Pay, you do not need to be connected to the internet at the time of purchase. However, an active data plan will be required to use the service in full - based on your data plan and mobile carrier's offering, additional message and data charges may apply. Your issuer’s terms and conditions will apply for all purchases made using Apple Pay.

By using a Device Account Number (also known as a ‘payment token’) to process payments, you don’t to share your underlying Visa card information when you shop with Apple Pay. This reduces the potential for fraud, because only the Device Account Number and a transaction-specific dynamic security code, are used to process your payment each time you make a purchase - your Visa card details are never actually shared with a merchant or stored on Apple Servers.

In addition, if your device is ever lost or stolen, you can use Find My iPhone to quickly put your device in Lost Mode. Or you can wipe your device completely clean completely. You can also stop the ability to make payments from credit and debit cards on your iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch with iCloud. Just log into iCloud.com and click on Settings.

Either way, both your card number and your identity are not accessible and you do not need to cancel your physical Visa card.

When making contactless payments with your iPhone or Apple Watch, simply activate the payment functionality, touch your device to the contactless reader and follow any prompts on the Point of Sale terminal.

The Device Account Number stored on your device will be transmitted directly to the contactless reader within this process, alongside a specially encrypted, dynamic code to authenticate the payment – it’s just like using a contactless plastic Visa card, but instead relies on NFC technology used on the iPhone and Apple Watch.

Device Account Numbers, as featured within Apple Pay, are linked to an underlying Visa card and your bank / credit provider – you can track completed transactions made with Apple Pay through the normal channels provided by your bank (for convenience, Wallet also displays a list of recent payments sent to merchants using Apple Pay).

Yes, of course – this can be done through the Wallet app on your iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch. If you remove a credit or debit card from Apple Pay, this will remove the Device Account Number for that card, from the service - you will still be able to continue to make purchases with your physical Visa card.

Retailers:

Any merchant with a contactless payment terminal enabled for Visa contactless, is already able to accept Apple Pay – there is no change required to terminal or point-of-sale infrastructure in order to support services such as Apple Pay being used to make Visa mobile contactless payments.
